First Time Home Owner Tips: Bathroom Remodeling

First Time Home Owner Bathroom RemodelingAs a first time home owner, you may not know what to expect when you begin your first time bathroom remodeling project. There are many choices of fixtures, colors, flooring, and accessories available. Remodeling does not have to be an overwhelming task. It can be fun, whether you do it yourself or contract the job out. You can have the dream bathroom that works for you.

Bathroom Remodeling Tips for the First Time Home Owner:

  • Plan ahead for future needs, such as additional family members. You do not want to have to remodel again in a couple of years.
  • Establish a budget beforehand. You don't want to be in the middle of a project and run out of money. Always plan for potential surprises.
  • When choosing your fixtures, keep water conservation in mind. Water conservation is an important environmental factor; some regions even have regulations for water usage amounts.
  • Buy a low-flow, dual-flush, or lower per-gallon flush rating toilet, as well as a low-flow shower head and faucet. These will save you money and help conserve water use.
  • Design your bathroom to accommodate everyone's needs, now and in the future. Keep it functional, yet appealing.
  • Choose flooring that will not be too slippery when it is wet, in order to avoid unnecessary falls.
  • Install an exhaust fan. Too much moisture can cause mildew or mold.
  • Make sure there is enough storage space for all of your bathroom needs and supplies.
  • Make sure you install appropriate lighting. Do not forget that a vanity area requires extra lighting.
  • Keep the bathroom functional for you. If you have small children you may not want to install a shower-only unit or a bathtub with high sides (remember to keep everyone safe, including the children and your back).
  • Choose colors that you will like for an extended amount of time. You may regret a pink bathtub several years down the road. Neutral fixtures work best.
  • Be practical and get what you want.

As a first time home owner, you do not need to feel overwhelmed when remodeling your bathroom for the first time. Most products state their uses and purpose quite well. Know what you want and research what you do not know before remodeling. You cannot over-plan. Most of all have fun creating your own personal space.

Many of these projects you can do yourself with minimal money. But if you want a complete bathroom remodel or addition, you may need to know about the FHA 203k home improvement loan. Learn all about this great option with "The FHA 203k Survival Guide" at the button below. This is a very popular guide, walking you through the home improvement process with a great financing option. Just reading your article over lunch and thought that I would touch upon a related subject- longvity of style for your bathroom renovation.
Dan Moyle spoke of picking colors you would to look at for a long time, and just wanted to mention choosing a style of bathroom that would also be welcomed 10 to 15 years from now. Of course I am a bit biased but Clawfoot tubs and the classic style bathrooms never look outdated...because they are classics.

This is especially true if you own a house that is from 1950 or older (older the better) as the styles will match up nicely.

Just a thought

Brad,
Those are my favorite tubs! So classy. And yeah, many homes (especially period homes) could benefit from the FHA 203k and use that home improvement financing to pay for things like claw foot bathtubs. Great idea!
