How a Home Improvement Loan Saved My Marriage
The honey-do list was getting long. Our roof was going bad. The windows let in all the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter. Peeling paint had us feeling like we were living in an ancient house and the carpets...well let's just say years of kids and pets hadn't been kind to them. My home improvement project list was growing by the day.
I knew I had to do something fast as the list started to become this "thing" between my wife and me. But with a full time job, kids and "life" getting in the way, managing these projects seemed impossible. And don't even get me started on the cost. Our house had negative equity so a HELOC was out. Plus with the cost of the work adding up, a 7-year home equity loan would have broke the budget.
Asking around I came across a solution I'd never heard of when a friend told me about home improvement loans. I had no idea I could refinance and remodel even with no equity in the house. In fact I found out I could refinance and remodel our kitchen as well as replace old windows and worn-out floors, repair the roof and even build my wife the deck she's always wanted.
One bonus for me was the fact that I could afford to hire professionals to do the work. Hammers are not my friend. I tend to stay away from all power tools...it's just better that way. Home improvement loans like the FHA 203k require the work be done by a professional, so the do-it-yourself weekened just opened up. I didn't have to try and schedule all that work!
Needless to say, my wife was happy that I could get all the work done without smashing my thumbs and within a reasonable monthly budget. Adding equity to our home with these upgrades made it seem like a no-brainer when looking at the cost. For only about $6 a month for every $1,000 in home improvements we financed, we could afford a $30,000 remodeling budget.
Now we're able to enjoy our new kitchen and deck without the awkward silence the ever-growing honey-do list was creating. The home improvement loan definitely saved my marriage. If I'd have waited any longer I think my wife would have included "build a room in the garage for your new bedroom" to the list!
