Boost Your Odds of Qualifying for a Mortgage Loan

Boost Your Odds of Qualifying for a Mortgage LoanFirst time home buyers need to know: The supply of home inventory is on the rise now. It is now the buyer's market since the interest rates are low in most parts. As a young person fresh from college, you want to have your own home. You need to act very fast.

This is the perfect time to buy a home (or even refinance your current house loan). Do not wait for the rates to shoot up. However, as a first home owner, it is natural for you to wonder where to start. Do you have the required qualities for a home loan?

Here are useful tips to boost your odds of qualifying for a mortgage loan.

  • Get and review your credit scores

Be sure to visit the credit reporting bureaus to request copies of your credit reports. After getting your credit scores from Experian, Trans-Union and Equifax, it’s advisable that you pay for the full reports and have them in handy.

Carefully check your reports to make sure that they are correct.  In case of any error, let your creditors know immediately.

  • Assemble your income statements

Collect and make copies of your tax returns and W-2 income statements for the last two years. You should also have the copies of your income statements for the last two months.

  • Keep all the balances on your credit cards low

Qualifying for a mortgage loan may require you to pay down all the balances. If possible, no balance should remain above 30% of its maximum limit.

Reducing your credit card balances will add you more qualification for extra credit. Just be sure not to close credit lines. A variety of credit background will earn you points.

  • Clear all the bills as soon as possible

Whether rental, electricity, car loans, phone, credit cards or school loans, qualifying for a mortgage loan requires you to clear your bills prior to their due dates.

As you make your timely payments, it is good to record them for any future evidence. Be sure to file all copies of any canceled check or online bank statement. This way, you will not miss making payments on time.

Many home loan lenders still remember the foreclosure fall-out of the past years. Therefore, unlike during housing booming, qualifying for a mortgage loan is not as easy as it once was. But these tips will surely put you on the front as you search for your first mortgage loan. It's also why mortgage pre-approval is so important.
