DIY Home Improvement: 5 Affordable Home Remodeling Projects

DIY Home Improvement 5 Affordable Home Remodeling ProjectsWhen making your house more livable or upgrading its appearance are on your priority list, consider these five DIY home improvements that won't break your budget. You don't have to spend thousands, either, for projects that refresh your home. In fact, some of these DIY home remodeling projects can be absolutely free.

  1. Paint. Nothing goes further, dollar for dollar, than painting your home, whether it's outside or in. Fresh paint, whether you use a neutral color widely preferred by many, or colorful accents on your indoor walls gives your home fresh energy. Some towns and cities who collect usable hazardous waste have centers where you can get absolutely free interior and exterior paint. Contact your city directly for availability.
  2. Plants. Adding plants to your yard or home is an inexpensive way to spruce up your environment. Some plants propagate from cuttings, so if you have friends, family or neighbors who are pruning, look into cultivating from plant slips or cuttings for some inexpensive landscaping improvements.
  3. Closets. End chaotic closets with closet organizers you either make on your own or buy from retailers. Using plastic boxes on the top shelves of closets keeps your items cleaner and organized. Hanging double rods from the highest closet rod increases the amount of space for clothing to hang. You can make your own by finding a thick dowel, drilling holes through each end and suspending it from the main rod with two lengths of sturdy cord or rope.
  4. Cabinet refacing. If you want to update the appearance of your kitchen or bathroom, consider refacing your cabinet. Entirely new cabinets can be an expensive improvement, but replacing just the cabinet doors is a viable option for cutting the cost of an entire remodel. You can also buy specialized paints that provide good adhesive properties over finished cabinets. It's more time consuming to paint them than hanging new doors, but you'll save a lot of money and may get a look that you like for pennies per square foot.
  5. Flooring. Watching for close-outs and flooring sales can help you get rid of that dingy carpeting or vinyl flooring that dates your home. Some kinds of flooring is perfect for a do-it-yourself project, and other types, like laminated, have a short learning curve for a professional installation. Advances in hard surface flooring, if that's your preference, provide inexpensive options that look just like real wood, tile or stone, but without the cost.
