How To: DIY Home Improvement Projects for Your Skill Level

How To DIY Home Improvement Projects for Your Skill Level pinterestThe term "DIY," or do it yourself, seems to frighten the faint at heart when it comes to redecorating or home renovations. You need not be afraid of these projects if you know where to start. Naturally a novice wouldn't begin with a complete kitchen makeover. Although some things are best left to the professionals, you can roll up your sleeves and use your creativity for the easier tasks. Here are a few DIY home improvement projects for a beginners skill level.

  • Paint furniture - Who says that painting is just for walls in your home. Give old furniture a face lift with a fresh coat of paint. First, use 80 to 100 bit sand paper on an orbital sander to remove as much of the old paint and stain as possible. Use several thin coats of primer as well as paint for a cleaner finish. Old armoires, dressers, and benches are great pieces to update with paint.
  • Make shade from mini blinds - For this DIY home improvement you'll need is a tape measure, scissors, fabric glue, old mini blinds, and enough fabric to cover the window. Let out the blinds fully and cut away the tilt strings on the blinds ensuring not to cut away the lift cord. Pull out most of the slats leaving a slat every nine inches for the folds of the shade.  Leave the thick top and bottom slats on the blinds. Cut the fabric and lay slats on fabric leaving a 2 1/2" border. Fold over the border and glue the fabric together. Keep the fabric unglued at the very ends for an easy slip into the wall mounted brackets. Glue the round side of the slats into place on the fabric. Once the glue dries, hang your finished shade like mini blinds.
  • Candy colored vases - Spruce up a child's play room or dark hallways with a candy colored vase. Simply take a mason jar or any other glass cylinder outside and spray paint. It's that easy! Lighter colors tend to be translucent so spray paint the inside white for an opaque effect. Tie ribbon or lace around the top for an added personalized flare.
