You Might Be a Renter If
No one can top Jeff Foxworthy for the redneck jokes. "If you mow your yard and find an old car, you might be a redneck." While these are funny, they're also helpful. I know people who go to family reunions to speed date. Now I know they're bona fide rednecks. So we thought it would be helpful to create a list to help people know if they're lifelong renters or if they're ready for a mortgage.
Without further ado...
You might be a renter if...
Mowing the yard is better left to management, not you. Step away from the mower.
Snow shovels leave you winded and ready for a nap - once again leave it to the apartment maintenance team.
You really don't see any value in long term investments.
You love to pack up boxes every year or so. What could be more fun than the vagabond life?
800 square foot of living space is like a mansion.
Decorating walls with anything other than posters and tape seems like a waste of time.
A small balcony is your idea of an "awesome deck."
You really just love helping out a landlord live large.
Owning a home is something only boring people do.
Folding chairs and futons are your idea of matching furniture.
Paying a mortgage is so last year.
Changing furnace filters and light bulbs goes beyond your skill set and work ethic.
The bottom line is that owning a home is a long term investment that involves hard work and learning some new skills (or having the number of a trusted plumber and lawn care company). Not everyone should just go out and become a first time home buyer. Sometimes renting makes sense - maybe you're establishing credit and trying to save up a down payment or ou're not planning on living in that area for long because of work - but owning a home has many benefits.
